Finishing
A two-stage washing process is recommended for garments and textiles made from Shetland yarns. The first wash removes the oils and unbound dyewear used in producing the yarn and the second helps create the desired level of surface and softness.
The first wash should take place at 40° C, with around 15 litres of water to 1kg of dry goods. A specialist detergent or similar agent should be added, up to 10% of the weight of goods to remove the processing oils. Five minutes should suffice for this stage, followed by draining and rinsing with clean water and then a short spin.
The second wash should follow the identical procedure, but with half the amount of the same detergent. A softner may then be added and the goods left to soak for a short period, before draining and spin-drying again, without rinsing. Finally, garments may be tumble-dried.
Handle should only be assessed after the garments have cooled and recovered their natural level of humidity.
